Mafia Romance May
A code of loyalty and silence
Not too long ago, mzkarareads asked me a question I haven’t stopped thinking about: Why do you enjoy mafia romance? Honestly, the question caught me off guard. If you know me, I’m a rule follower and very risk-averse. So yeah, why do I reach for mafia romance, stories full of danger, violence, and wildly questionable life choices?
If you’ve been around for a while, you know what this means. Side quest activated….and Mafia Romance May was born as a reading project.
Disclaimer: There’s nothing wrong with mafia romance, that’s not the takeaway, but I think it’s important to evaluate my reading consumption.
After sitting with the question for a while, I realized the answer isn’t about risk or bad-boy appeal. I’m fascinated by the structure. Mafia romance worlds are intensely organized. There are rules, hierarchies, codes of loyalty, and very clear deliverables 😉. I also think I’m drawn to how this organization almost always has a found-family and chosen-family trope, albeit bound by symbolic blood. Yes, I know there’s often a traditional family, but any non-family bonds are typically rooted in friendship or protection. The stakes feel higher because of the constant moral tug‑of‑war, and I'm confronted with who’s actually the villain here? Is it the crime boss, the system itself, the outside world threatening their survival, or all of the above?
These books give me room to wrestle with morally gray characters while still operating inside a world that has order. For someone who avoids risk in real life, that kind of contained danger works. Or I could be doing mental gymnastics to say I like a thing.
So what did this side quest actually look like? I ended up spending part of the summer learning about the American Mafia. And in this detour, I found some interesting context (also, if someone was monitoring my web history, let it be known it was ONLY for research purposes).
The American Mafia, or La Cosa Nostra, has its roots in Sicily, where centuries of foreign rule created deep distrust in the Italian authorities. The mafia was really there to protect against the central authority, serving as an informal system of protection and a means of survival when the state failed to protect its people. When large numbers of Sicilian immigrants came to the U.S. in the late 1800s and early 1900s1, those systems came with them, especially to cities like New York and Chicago. Over time, they evolved into a highly organized crime network with a tightly structured system. The American Mafia, which rose to power in the 1920s, is a separate entity from the Mafia in Italy, although they share such traditions as omerta, a code of conduct, silence, and loyalty2.
Under omertà, members are expected never to speak to law enforcement, never to acknowledge the organization’s existence, and to handle disputes internally rather than through the legal system, even if they are victims of a crime. Breaking this code is considered a serious betrayal and has historically carried severe consequences, including violence or death
How does this apply to mafia romance?
Mafia romance, a subgenre of romantic suspense, takes the Italian Mafia framework and creates fictional organized crime systems. A point of clarification: while mafia is technically designated to Italian‑Americans, mafia romance often includes Russian Bratva, Irish mobs, Yakuza, Cartels, Gangs, etc. (each faction has its own cultural context and norms, and, of course, a side of romance).
And this is where Mafia Romance May comes in. For me, it’s a chance to slow down and look more closely at the sub-genre, why it works, where it gets messy, and why I often find it to be a reading palate cleanser. Throughout the month, I’ll be highlighting various mafia romances, pairing books with documentaries and nonfiction works. A true side quest and a very large TBR.
I’m going to keep it real simple because life is lifing, but this is the plan.
Happy Reading!
